Where Meetups meets Bumble BFF
TLDR: Scroll to the bottom to see quick notes on developing Urbinite
What started as a desire to document all of the coffee shops & events happening in NYC, became an idea to build an app to help newcomers to the city explore their interests and make meaningful connections by combining the online experience with in-person interaction.
The vision was to create communities around different interests; including fashion, food, music, etc. I was advised to start by creating events for one type of community.
I love fashion, so naturally, building a fashion community was where I started. COVID19 began just as I was figuring out how to host the first in-person event so I pivoted Urbinite to virtual events.
After hosting 8 events, I realized that building a fashion community wouldn’t be scalable for a startup aiming to build multiple types of interest-focused communities in cities worldwide.
I then considered building an events-focused app to help college students manage their social calendars and stay up to date with their clubs.
I’m not currently working on Urbinite but it’s always nice to reflect. Below, you’ll see info on the pitch & demo, building a fashion community, the website, and branding.

Traditionally, the word is spelled with an “a” but since Urbinite is all about you, we replaced the “a” with “i” to emphasize that we want you to selfishly explore your interests.
